Not only is Rey's mom and dad no longer alive, they were absolute nobodies who sold her for booze money and are currently buried in a shallow grave. Not only is Luke's father alive, but he's one of the biggest bad guys in the galaxy and really wants his son to join the bad guy army too. In both cases, the parentage reveal is the worst possible news that both characters, respectively, could have received. So when Rey senses, and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) confirms that her folks were nobodies who didn't love her and threw her away, she is confronted with the idea that she is nobody special and she has to make her own path without any ancestral guidance. She pines for the family she lost, with the implicit presumption that finding her family will finally put into motion the person she is supposed to be and the path she is supposed to take. The reveal throws Luke's world into flux, both in terms of what he knew to be true and whose example he was intended to live up to.Ĭonversely, Rey has spent decades waiting on a glorified trash planet in the hopes that her family would come back for her. Luke grew up not knowing much about his father, and Ben Kenobi (Alec Guinness) told him his dad was a war hero who was killed in action by one of the Empire's top lieutenants. The reason that the "Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill)'s father" reveal is such a shocker in The Empire Strikes Back, aside from the mere fact that this kind of deeply continuity-entrenched cinematic storytelling wasn't entirely par for the course at the time, was that it affected Luke's worldview.
